New service delivers product information to your cell phone

by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor

For $3.99 per month ShopSmart will deliver product ratings, prices and reviews to your cell phone through Verizon Wireless. The content will cover categories like electronics, appliances and home and garden.

If you've ever felt duped by a salesperson who says, "You won't find this item for a lower price," Consumer Reports wants to help. Its new service ShopSmart delivers product ratings, prices and reviews to your cell phone for $3.99 per month. It's available with Verizon Wireless' "get it now" and Sprint's "vision" --- specific applications and content offered by the phone companies. "Information is power," says Carol Lappin, Consumer Reports' business development director. "I like the idea of holding (salespeoples') feet to the fire. Yonkers-based Consumer Reports tried to make its complete Web site available through the phone, but there was too much information and it was nearly impossible to traverse. Instead they made content available for the most popular categories --- electronics, appliances, and home and garden. Within those categories are dozens of products such as car seats, lawn mowers and vacuums. ShopSmart is a direct attempt by Consumer Reports to reach a younger audience. The average age of visitors to the company's Web site (www.consumer reports.org) is 42. ShopSmart is aimed at the 25- to 40-year-old age bracket. Consumers will go through their cell phone carrier to sign up for service. For consumers who still can't make a decision with the information sent to their phone, they can enter their e-mail address into SmartSearch and have additional data sent to them from ConsumerReports.org.
