False claims land Manhattan hospital in a world of trouble

Manhattan's Cabrini Medical Center is being sued by federal prosecutors for submitting false claims to the Medicaid program for hundreds of patients over a three-year span.

Federal prosecutors have sued the Cabrini Medical Center, accusing the Manhattan hospital of submitting false claims to the Medicaid program on behalf of hundreds of patients who were illegally referred to Cabrini over a three-year span. The civil action was filed in U.S. District Court in Manhattan on Friday and announced on Tuesday by U.S. Attorney Michael J. Garcia. Garcia said the allegations against Cabrini were first brought to the government's attention by a whistleblower who filed a lawsuit against the hospital under provisions of the False Claims Act. The law permits the government to join the action. The government lawsuit accused Cabrini of falsely billing Medicaid from 1997 to 2000 for the care of patients who were illegally referred by a consulting company that has already agreed to pay the government $2.75 million to settle claims against it. The government lawsuit was filed two days after Garcia announced that the Beth Israel Medical Center would pay $72 million to resolve civil charges against it for Medicare fraud. Cabrini Medical Center said in a statement that it "strongly disagrees with the government's characterization of the facts in its press release, which is based solely on unproven allegations for which no evidence has been provided."
