South Carolina school lunches suffer from poor nutrition

by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor

One concerned South Carolinan named Vickie Baumann writes about her experiences eating at grade school cafeterias in Beaufort, and her recommendation is that parents become more involved to pressure schools to provide nutritious food to their children for lunch.

The Nov. 30 Packet reported that most Beaufort County Schools passed the state health department sanitation inspection. According to reports, South Carolina ranks third in deaths related to obesity. Our school cafeterias need to lead the way to proper nutrition. I eat lunch once a week with a Hilton Head Island fourth-grader whom I mentor. Not only are they nutritionally unbalanced, but they also are aesthetically unappealing. The fourth-graders eat last and seldom are there fruits and vegetables left. One day they ran out of buns and put chicken patties between two pieces of spongy white bread. Another day the fare consisted of macaroni and cheese, corn and cornbread. Earlier there may have been a fruit or vegetable, but not by the time this class came through the line. The waste is appalling, but I admit that most of my lunch goes into the trash as well. If you find the fare unacceptable, complain to the principal. If enough of you do so, perhaps South Carolina children will have meals that exemplify good nutrition, and the number of obese children in South Carolina will decline.
