Investigators discover high salt levels in fast food salads

by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor

According to the Consumers' Association's investigation, salads offered by fast foods restaurants, like KFC and McDonald's, are often as unhealthy as their burgers and fries, because of high salt content.

Fast food chains' 'healthier' looking salads can contain more fat and salt than a burger and chips, a report warns today. A KFC Original Chicken Salad had more salt per portion than a Chicken Fillet Burger and fries, according to the Consumers' Association's investigation. Of all food tested from KFC and McDonald's, the three with the most salt were salads - each having 3g of salt which is more than half the recommended 6g daily intake, reports the watchdog's magazine Which?. A McDonald's Crispy Chicken Ranch salad with dressing had 11.1g of saturated fat per portion, over half the 20g a woman should eat a day. The survey of the big four - Burger King, KFC, McDonald's and Pizza Hut - also found company information cannot always be trusted. editor Malcolm Coles said: "Size is not everything. And our investigation into the huge fast food industry reveals the downside of its convenience. You expect burgers to be loaded with calories. "But a McDonald's, including dressing, had 11.1g of saturated fat per portion - more than half the recommended maximum daily intake for a woman. A surprising list of 11 other ingredients includes partially hydrogenated vegetable oil, rice flour, dextrose, corn syrup solids and salt. McDonald's Chicken Grills may look like pieces of simple grilled chicken breast, but they contain 19 other ingredients including flour, starch, oil and lactose. A Pizza Hut Margherita Pan Pizza and Garlic Bread contains 5.4g of salt -- almost all of the government's recommended daily maximum of 6g. Saturated and trans fats raise cholesterol and increase the risk of heart disease. A Burger King spokesperson said: "The nutritional figures quoted on the Burger King website are typical figures and are intended as a guide for our customers.
