San Francisco receives accolades for local investment in alternative fuels

by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor

On a recent visit to San Francisco, California Democratic Senator Barbara Boxer praised the progressive city for its investment in alternative fuels, serving as a civic example for the green communities of the future.

California Democratic Senator Barbara Boxer came to San Francisco today to praise the city for investing in alternative fuels. She blamed the Republicans for failing to act on the issue. But environmentalists say local efforts have outpaced what Washington has been doing for decades. That well worn mantra of the environmental movement is a pretty apt description of what's been happening for the past 30 years. The action and the leadership is coming from the local level, not from Washington. Senator Barbara Boxer toured a city garage in San Francisco this morning, looking at some of the city's 800 alternative fuel cars and busses. Boxer gave the environmental department her "conservation champion award" and then blasted the white house serving big oil and big energy. Almost 30 years ago, President Jimmy Carter presented Congress with an alternative fuels program that he said would be of the same scope as the Manhattan Project or the space program. Boxer also pointed out that most of the country wasn't behind Carter's call for sacrifice and conservation. She then added that casting blame isn't the point. Jared Blumenfeld, San Francisco Environmental Dept.: "A great example is green buildings. Blumenfeld says San Francisco and a dozen other big cities from here to Boston have instituted green building codes on their own. Private companies are investing in alternative energy sources and wanting to trade-in air pollution credits designed to decrease smog. Consumers have demanded and gotten more fuel efficient cars even though car makers continue to lobby Washington to prevent higher fuel efficiency standards. Eighty percent of that to Republicans who control the House and the Senate. Would it be different if Democrats were in the majority?
