Solar panels now power many parts of Guantanamo

Granma, the daily Cuban newspaper, reports that solar energy is now a part of Guantanamo life, as workers from Copextel, an electronic firm, have installed solar energy systems in the community with the help of the National Center for the Use of Sustainable Development Technologies.



A program to use solar panels to generate electricity is being widely spread across the eastern province of Guantanamo, especially in the mountainous areas. A RURAL HOUSE RUN ON SOLAR ENERGY IN THE MUNICIPALITY OF SAN ANTONIO DEL SUR. Some 1,084 solar energy systems have been installed in several community facilities such as schools, family health clinics and small television and movie halls; 75 of which were erected this year. In addition, several public work projects in the mountains have brought solar energy systems to rural homes, especially those in coffee producing and forestry industry communities. Over the last two years, more than 90 houses have been equipped with solar panels, largely in the municipalities of Yateras and San Antonio del Sur, benefiting more than 400 people. Increasingly making solar energy technology available, is part of an effort to improve the quality of life in remote mountainous areas and to foster the use of this clean energy source across Cuba. The installation of solar energy systems is being undertaken by workers from the high-tech electronic firm, Copextel, and the National Center for the Use of Sustainable Development Technologies. Each system costs 1,856 dollars and is financed by the Cuban Society for the Promotion of Respect for the Environment and of Renewable Sources of Energy (CUBASOLAR).
