Dr. Dave Hnida talks about five foods that help your body ward off chronic disease, including sauerkraut, cranberries and garlic.

DENVER Forget the Echinacea and handfuls or vitamins. The best way to stay healthy and build an immune system is to eat the right foods. As people look for ways to stay healthy during cold and flu season, Dr. Dave Hnida has a list of five foods that can help people fight disease. Dr. Dave said it is best for boosting the immune system. He said to make sure and eat cloves or garlic, not pills. That means eating Italian foods and other garlicky favorites a few times a week. Dr. Dave said it's not just for bladder infections. New research shows cranberries may keep germs from sticking to the lining of your respiratory tract. The number three best food for staying healthy is a type of bacteria. Dr. Dave said probiotics are basically good bacteria. Studies show people who drink 8 million lactobacillus cultures each day get sick less often than those who drink a placebo. Each little bottle of probiotics has more than 8 million lactobacillus cultures. Food number two on the healthy eating list is sauerkraut. The latest word from farms, according to Dr. Dave, is the fermented bacteria in sauerkraut kill avian flu and conventional germs as well. Dr. Dave's number one food for fighting disease and helping the immune system is chicken soup. He said more and more research indicates old fashioned chicken soup is the best immune booster in the kitchen. "A bowl a day keeps the doctor away," Dr. Dave said. Dr. Dave said fatty foods are the worst for the immune system because they literally slow immune cells. Add onions, sweet potato, parsnips, turnips and carrots.
