New Orleans to deploy free Wi-Fi

by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor

New Orleans will deploy the United States' first free, municipally-owned Wi-Fi system to invigorate recovery in the city. The system was mainly donated, and will be used by law enforcement, city government and civilians.

JAZZ and "rioting capital" of the world, New Orleans is to deploy the US's first free municipally owned wireless Internet system. The move is designed to jump start recovery in the city which got deluged during a recent hurricane. The system will also be used by law enforcement and city government. Much of the kit was donated and will be mounted on streetlights to beam out fast Internet connections for wireless-enabled computers. The New Orleans system will initially be at 512-kilobit-per-second speed, which city officials said is the most the network can handle. It will go online today in the central business district and the French Quarter and will be expanded over time. Of course the telephone and cable companies are screaming blue murder about the plan, but because the city is under a state of emergency, the City can skirt existing laws.
