Dietitian holds fast to nutritional beliefs in spite of holiday temptations

by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor

Toronto dietitian Leslie Beck doesn't believe that the holidays are a time to gain weight without concern, as she informs her readers of ways to sidestep the weight gain that becomes associated with the holiday season and close of the year.

The holidays are a time to eat, drink and enjoy. While you don't need to deprive yourself of festive treats, you should be careful when staring at the hors d'oeuvres table. It's hard to imagine that a few bite-size cocktail foods can expand your waistline. They may be baked in your oven, but many frozen hors d'oeuvres are fried in fat before they make it into your shopping cart. Egg rolls, spring rolls and breaded shrimp appetizers are usually precooked in vegetable oil. Indulge in two President's Choice Vegetable Spring Rolls (fried in canola oil) and you'll consume 120 calories and 7 grams of fat. Puff pastry hors d'oeuvres are made with ingredients such as butter, canola oil, modified palm oil and shortening (a source of trans fat). Four bite-size sausage rolls pack in 200 calories and 11 grams of fat; almost one-third of the fat is saturated fat. Whole Foods Whole Kitchen Smoked Salmon Puffs sound like a healthier choice compared with sausage rolls, right? Four little puffs will set you back 400 calories, 29 grams of fat and two teaspoons worth of saturated fat (no trans fat though). A couple of Jalapeno Poppers (peppers stuffed with cheese) will cost you 170 calories and 10 grams of fat (3.5 grams of saturated fat). Unless you plan to compensate for those extra nibbles by notching up your exercise routine, it pays to be selective when it comes to holiday hors d'oeuvres. A yogurt and a piece of fruit, a skim milk latte, an energy bar or a bowl of vegetable soup will take the edge off your appetite and prevent you from overeating. Limit yourself to no more than one drink an hour.
