Winter provides fruits and veggies high in nutritional value

A CBS affiliate station in Salt Lake City talks about the nutrition of produce available in winter months, including pomegranates and other super-healthy fruits.
When we think of fresh fruits and vegetables, summer usually comes to mind.
In our Healthy Living report why winter produce packs a powerful punch when it comes to your health.
Grapes and strawberries may be out of season but some of the fruits and veggies that are in, are among the best for your heath.
A recent study shows pomegranates contain powerful antioxidants that protect our hearts.
"They've always been good for you but now we have scientific proof that they're really good for your heart, blood vessels and they're antioxidants," said Rachel Jones dietician U of U.
Another winter fruit that packs a powerful health punch cranberries.
They too contain protective antioxidants, but a recent study shows an unexpected benefit.
"We're seeing now for dental care, cranberries have a benefit," said Jones.
It turns out the same chemicals in cranberries that help reduce the risk of urinary infections also help prevent cavities and tooth decay.
Winter squash is among the healthiest of vegetables.
Dieticians say when you see those bright orange and yellow colors you know you're getting beta carotene and Vitamin A which can boost your immune system.
As a rule of thumb, dieticians say the more colorful, the more nutritious which makes winter produce top of the list when it comes to your health.
"I think it's one of the most exciting times for produce, for getting those fruits and veggies in that are the most colorful," said Jones.
Dieticians say nutrients are packed in so tightly to fruits like cranberries and pomegranates, even small amounts are good for you.
