Purdue research suggests calcium may prove effective as a weight loss supplement

In Philadelphia, Stephanie Stahl reports on the latest research from Purdue University that claims calcium can aid people who are trying to lose weight.

The calcium in milk and other dairy products appears to help people lose weight. A newly released study is the first to pinpoint why. Women in the study who consumed three to four servings of dairy products a day lost the most weight. The research, from Purdue University tracked 19 young women over a year. "Those women who consumed higher dairy product intake for the year increased their ability to burn fat and calories from a meal," described Dr. Dorothy Teegarden of Purdue University. Women in the study were encouraged to eat healthy, but they did not have to restrict calories and they could have either regular or low fat dairy. "Calcium by itself may promote weight loss," said Dr. Teegarden. The benefits came with 800 to 14-hundred milligrams of calcium a day that could come from say four glasses of milk. Past studies have shown the weight loss benefits of calcium, but this new research explains that calcium actually accelerates fat burning. "That change in the ability to burn fat was related to the change in a hormone called the parathyroid hormone," stated Dr. Teegarden. If you do not like dairy and would prefer a supplement, the Purdue researchers say it does not work as well. The best diet benefits came from drinking milk, but yogurt and cheese was also helpful.
