Company recalls surgical device because of malfunction risk

Because of product malfunction, Boston Scientific is recalling nearly 40,000 Flextome Cutting Balloon systems, which help surgeons cut through diseased arteries often thickened with fatty deposits.

Boston Scientific announces Thursday it is recalling all of its Flextome Cutting Balloon systems due to a malfunction that could require more surgery. According to Reuters, the company says it is voluntarily recalling about 40,000 of the devices, which help cut through fatty deposits in diseased arteries. It adds the recall does not affect patients who have received treatment with the products. The cutting balloon system consists of an angioplasty balloon equipped with microsurgical blades that cut through fatty deposits, allowing the balloon to dilate the vessel. Boston Scientific says it began the recall when it discovered the delivery catheter could separate during removal of the device. The company is also notifying officials in other countries of the recall.
