Osteoporosis education is a priority in Florida

by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor

The Sun Herald highlights efforts made by Florida's Department of Health to educate the general public about osteoporosis and ways to prevent the debilitating disease.

Osteoporosis is a debilitating disease in which bones become fragile and are more likely to break. It is called the "silent disease" because often there are no symptoms until a fracture occurs. According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, this disease is a growing public health threat and affects one in two women and more than one in eight men. The Florida Department of Health, in partnership with Gulfcoast South Area Health Education Center, is providing osteoporosis education in Sarasota, Manatee, Charlotte and DeSoto counties. A curriculum called Families Building Strong Bones was developed to teach adult osteoporosis education. Participants will learn about osteoporosis and how to prevent it; how calcium, exercise and vitamin D help build strong bones; how to identify risk factors for getting osteoporosis like smoking, caffeine, alcohol and lack of exercise; and that medications are available to help prevent and treat osteoporosis. To a schedule a free Families Building Strong Bones program for your employees, your civic group, church, or neighborhood association, please call Ansley Mora at Gulfcoast South AHEC at (941) 361-6602 or email [email protected].
