Battle over energy brews in South Wales

by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor

As Prime Minister Tony Blair pushes for nuclear power in Wales, the Welsh Assembly Government and Welsh Secretary Peter Hain have offered strong opposition to the installation of nuclear power stations.

WALES' anti-nuclear politicians were told last night to grasp the nettle and accept a new generation of power stations needs to be built to meet a growing global energy gap. Welsh union leaders backed that view, with a warning that Wales will become a net importer of energy by 2010 - a situation that already exists in much of South Wales, leaving families with some of the highest bills in the UK. But Mr Blair faces stiff opposition from both the Welsh Assembly Government and Welsh Secretary Peter Hain, who have both taken an anti-nuclear position. The WAG insisted last night it intended to meet Wales' economic needs "without pursuing the nuclear option". Mr Blair said yesterday, "With some of the issues to do with climate change, and you can see it with the debate about nuclear power, there are going to be difficult and controversial decisions Government has got to take. About energy security and supply, that will mean issues that are bound to be extremely controversial." But he insisted that the reason why people were coming round to the nuclear option was "because the facts have changed". Mr Blair is said to have been convinced that if Britain is to meet carbon emission targets, and to secure its energy supply, nuclear power will be needed. Without new sites there are fears Britain could become over-dependent on imported gas and oil from unstable countries such as Russia and China. South Wales' current and costly reliance on imported electricity is likely to end in the next three or four years as the new gas-fired stations at Milford Haven and Uskmouth come on stream. Gas prices have risen fast as temperatures have fallen, more than tripling over the past week to reach 155p a therm yesterday, its highest level since March.
