Mac experts predict a surprise from Apple in January

by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor

Wall Street analysts and Mac experts alike are predicting that Apple will make the switch to running on Intel chips in January instead of June as announced. Apple has not commented on the rumors.

Apple fans: Don't spend all of your holiday money on a video iPod--Wall Street analysts and Mac experts are predicting a surprise announcement of a new Intel-based Mac at MacWorld this January. Back in June, Apple Computer (nasdaq: AAPL - news - people) announced that it would have a Mac running on Intel (nasdaq: INTC - news - people) chips by June 2006, but the Street and the geeks have a hunch that the company could make the transition much sooner. "Our extensive checks in the supply chain are pointing to a very possible early introduction of Intel-based Macs before the June 2006 target date, with a possible Intel-based Mac Mini introduced at MacWorld," wrote UBS Analyst Ben Reitzes in a recent research report that got tongues wagging all over Mac rumor Web sites. After all, the hardware exists already--Steve Jobs previewed a version of Mac OS X Tiger on an Intel-based Mac at his June keynote address--and with 60,000 of the faithful at MacWorld, the media buzz would be huge. Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster also said an Intel Mac could make its debut at January's convention and be available soon after. The move to Intel microprocessors marks a tectonic shift for Apple. It's been ten years since the company's last microprocessor transition, the PowerPC, which was developed through an alliance of Apple, IBM (nyse: IBM - news - people) and Motorola (nyse: MOT - news - people). "Surprise is a very Apple-y thing to do," said LeVitus. "Apple traditionally launches their blockbuster product at MacWorld." Inahtko said he would be surprised to see an Intel Mac in January, but agreed that it would definitely come out before the announced June date.
