course of Type II diabetes, may delay the onset of the most serious results of this illness. In some cases, lifestyle changes may be enough to stop the disease in its tracks. All the choices come down to one decision. Namely, just how important are all the flavors that I enjoy? Does the quality of my life depend upon my attachment to any certain taste in my mouth, however fleeting? I know so many people who tell me how they could never give up steak or red wine or venison or lobster or chocolate chip cookies or "rocky roadrunner" ice cream. Do I really need sugar in my coffee? No, actually it tastes better now without it. Yes, but many brands are loaded with sugar. The peanut butters without added sugars actually taste more like peanuts. Truly, I need to consult with a nutritionist who understands diabetes. A nutritionist will not tell me what I can and cannot eat. However, a nutritionist will tell me the consequences of eating certain foods, and those consequences may not be in accordance with my desire for healthy longevity. Probably, most of my favorite foods will not be on my new diet. I'll pick the best fuel that I can and stop running this machine on the cheap. It's getting older and has a lot of miles on it. But it has a lot of good miles left, if I just take a little better care of it.
