Canadians given nutritional advice to encourage bone health
by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor
Currently, 1.4 million Canadians suffer from osteoporosis, so for National Osteoporosis Month, health officials are promoting foods and vitamins that contribute to bone health, in hopes of curbing the growth of the disease in the population.
Another 2 million Canadians -- women and men -- are at risk of developing this bone-thinning disease, often called the "Silent Thief" because it robs bones of strength over time, making them weak and prone to fracture.
Lifestyle choices such as a sedentary lifestyle, smoking, excessive use of alcohol and an inadequate diet increase risk of osteoporosis as well.
Adults, aged 19 to 50 require 1,000 mg per day and older adults need 1,500 mg daily.
The best sources of absorbable calcium are dairy products, calcium fortified products such soy and rice beverages and some orange juices, salmon or sardines with the bones.
One cup of 2% milk contains about 300 mg as does 1 cup fortified orange juice, 1 cup fortified soy or rice beverage, 3/4 cup plain yogurt or 1.5 oz.
VITAMIN D: Vitamin D helps your body absorb the calcium you eat and is very important in preventing osteoporosis.
A recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association showed that Vitamin D may be even more important when it comes to bone health.
It can be challenging to get enough D from food alone.
It is found naturally in fatty fish and eggs.
One cup (250 mL) of fluid milk contains 100 IU, one cup (250 mL) fortified rice or soy beverage contains 88 IU, 3.5 oz.
The recommended dietary intake for vitamin K is 120 mcg for men and 90 mcg for women but some studies suggest that your bones may need even more.
FRUITS AND VEGETABLES: Recent studies have shown that boys and girl who eat more fruits and vegetables have stronger, denser bones.
PROTEIN: There is some evidence that eating too little protein may increase risk of hip fractures.
