Nikon recalls batteries due to fire risk
by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor
A worldwide voluntary recall and replacement of Nikon batteries has been implemented for batteries for digital SLR cameras. The batteries may overheat and cause deformation or even fire. Models affected include the D100, D70 and D50.
NIKON has announced a worldwide voluntary recall and replacement program for batteries sold with its digital SLR cameras, citing a possible fire risk.
The batteries may also have been sold individually, and in some cases may have been acquired while travelling overseas.
The Nikon EN-EL3 lithium-ion rechargeable units would have been sold in Australia between August 2004 and October 2005.
Nikon said the battery may overheat causing it to become deformed or, in the worst case, to catch fire.
Nikon stressed there had been no such incidents reported in Australia and that the recall was based on a small number of incidents overseas.
The product name EN-EL3 can be found on a seal placed on the bottom of the battery (ie the surface covered by the terminal cover) and the production lot number is printed in the centre groove on the same surface.
Customers who own one of the recalled batteries will be provided with a replacement battery at no cost.
Nikon recommends that the batteries be removed and not used further.
The company has also posted information regarding the recall online.
Information can also be obtained via email, or by calling a special recall hotline on 1 800 810 259.
