According to the Associated Press, the Senate Indian Affairs Committee is investigating Michael Scanlon and Jack Abramoff in regards to a charge of conspiring to defraud several Native American tribes they represented.
Michael Scanlon, partner of lobbyist Jack Abramoff, is charged Friday with conspiring to defraud Native American tribes out of millions of dollars.
The scheme, say government documents, entailed recruiting a member of Congress with gifts, trips, meals, entertainment and campaign contributions in an effort to pass legislation.
The Associated Press reports that it is a matter of public record that Scanlon and Abramoff had a fee-splitting arrangement and represented several Indian tribes.
Scanlon was once a top aide to former House Majority Leader Tom Delay, who stepped down from his leadership post after being charged with violating campaign finance law in Texas.
The Senate Indian Affairs Committee is investigating Abramoff and Scanlon and the more than $80 million they were paid between 2001 and 2004 by six Native American tribes owning casinos.
