Survey finds New Yorkers are in denial about body weight problems

by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor

According to the New York Daily News, a Health Department study found that one in five New Yorkers are obese, which translates to one million people, and 53 percent of the city qualifies as overweight.

You might want to think twice before digging in for a second helping of Thanksgiving dinner. About one in five adult New Yorkers, or 1million people, are obese. But most don't even know it - or will admit it. Only 39% of obese adults believe they are "very overweight" when asked, according to a city Health Department study released yesterday. "That means almost two-thirds of the people who are obese aren't aware they are obese," said Gretchen Van Wye, director of community epidemiology at the Health Department. "In general, women are more likely than men to correctly identify themselves as very overweight," she added. According to the report, 53% of adults in the city are overweight or obese. Although many neighborhoods are full of corner vegetable markets and gyms, too many New Yorkers aren't using them. Health officials said 91% of New Yorkers don't eat the recommended diet of five servings of fruits and vegetables every day, and only 26% of New Yorkers exercise 30 minutes a day, four times a week. "We're seeing a lot of sedentary behavior," Van Wye said. Obese people are three times more likely to be diabetic, have high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Researchers noted there is a link between obesity and poverty. Higher rates of obesity are found in the city's poorer neighborhoods.
