In Lima, Ohio, state Gov. Bob Taft presented the Ford Engine plant the 2005 Governor’s Award for Excellence in Energy Efficiency.
Bob Taft announced the recipients of the 2005 Governor's Award for Excellence in En-ergy Efficiency, which recognizes organizations for their efforts to improve energy efficiency, the environment and Ohio's economic competitiveness.
The Ford plant installed a chilled water system that provides cooling for plant operations, as well as air tempering for employee comfort.
The design uses naturally cooled water from two abandoned limestone quarries on the plant's 312-acre site.
"I commend all of today's winners for their innovative work in promoting energy efficiency, the environment and Ohio's economic competitiveness," Taft said.
"These individuals and organizations are contributing enormously to Ohio's success in a competitive, energy-dependent world economy, and their efforts to foster renewable energy and increase energy efficiency will benefit all Ohioans."
Ford was among 10 honorees, including Honda of America in East Liberty.
The Honda plant shut down and replaced its 1989 boiler system with one that is more energy efficient and uses an alternate method of generating heat and humidity.
It resulted in a 78 percent reduction in natural gas usage and a 76 percent reduction in operating costs.
Other winners were the University of Cincinnati for consolidated utilities, the State Teach-ers Retirement System of Ohio for efficient lighting, Kent State University for a combined heat and power project, Ohio Municipal Electric Generating Agency for a wind farm, Lorain Joint Vocational School for an environmentally conscious model home, Lake Metroparks in Kirtland for renewable energy, Alvin & Mary Co. in Lucas County for a solar powered home and E-Truck and FirstEnergy Corp. for investing in Energy Star Habitat for Humanity homes.
"The Department of Development continues to pursue new op-portunities that help conserve energy, use alternative energy sources and implement technolo-gies that require less energy."
