California power company unveils bus powered by fuel cells

In California, UTC Power, a subsidiary of United Technologies Corp., has released a fuel cell bus that can reach a speed of 65 mph and travel 300 miles without refueling.
UTC Power, a subsidiary of United Technologies Corp., unveiled a bus powered by a fuel cell.
UTC's 40-foot Van Hool Hydrogen A330 bus can reach 65 miles per hour and travels 250-to-300 miles before refueling.
The bus features a hybrid-electric drive system and a so-called 120-kW PureMotion fuel cell power system.
PureMotion combines pure hydrogen stored aboard the bus with oxygen drawn from the air at near-ambient pressure to produce highly-efficient power.
"With buses and heavy commercial vehicles producing more than 60 percent of the U.S. automotive industry's nitrogen oxide emissions while representing just 6 percent of the nation's vehicles, cleaner bus fleets need to be a national priority," said UTC Power President Jan van Dokkum, in a statement.
"This fuel cell powered bus is twice as efficient as a diesel powered vehicle with water as the only emission."
PureMotion represents more than four years of research and development in partnership with the U.S. Department of Defense through the U.S. Army Tank-automotive and Armaments Command (TACOM) and the U.S. Department of Transportation through the Northeast Advanced Vehicle Consortium.
