Alternative energy front and center in Missouri discussions

In Missouri, energy discussions guided by Dan Dasho, the director of Columbia Water and Light, have promoted a greater awareness of the future needs of the community.
With high fuel costs in mind, residents on Tuesday discussed sources of energy that would be both cost-effective and environment-friendly.
Expanding existing power plants and purchasing energy from other plants were some options given by Dan Dasho, the director of Columbia Water and Light.
"My goal is to produce more in our town with less pollution," Dasho said.
Dasho said Columbia's power supply is a long-term concern, because residents consume more energy each year.
He also discussed the possibility of using renewable energy sources, such as wind, solar and bio-mass power.
Dasho said a new standard has been adopted that calls for the city's renewable energy consumption in 2007 to be at least two percent of its total consumption.
Under the standard, 15 percent of the city's power would come from renewable energy in 2022, he said.
If there is a two percent reduction in every household's electric consumption, there could be significant cost savings, Dasho said.
He stressed the need to conserve energy and educate residents on conservation.
About 30 residents attended the meeting at the Columbia Public Library, sponsored by the Columbia-Boone County chapter of the League of Women Voters.
"I came because I am concerned with conservation issues and alternative energy sources," said resident Mary Williamson.
