Google and Yahoo offer mobile phone content

by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor

Google has introduced software that allows users search for local businesses and view maps on handsets. Next year Cingular will introduce a phone that links to Yahoo content.

Inc. are expanding the content they offer on mobile phones, a further sign of the growing connection between the Web and wireless services. Google introduced software Monday that lets users search for local businesses and view maps and satellite images on handsets, the company said. SBC Communications Inc. said it will introduce a Cingular cell phone next year that links to Yahoo! The plans highlight the eagerness of Internet and mobile-phone companies to attract consumers who want to use their phones to view information while on the move. Mobile phones outsold personal computers by an almost 4-1 ratio last year, researcher Gartner Inc. said. Handset sales grew 30 percent, more than twice as fast as PCs. "It's an important next step," Deep Nishar, a Google director of product management, said. The software is an enhancement to Google's previous mobile search services because users don't have to open a Web browser on their phones to display information, he said. Google's new tool, called Google Local for mobile, works with certain handsets from Cingular Wireless, Sprint Nextel Corp. and T-Mobile USA Inc. The software also allows users to search for driving directions and zoom in and out of digital maps. Google doesn't charge for the service, although data fees may be levied under some carriers' plans. Nishar said Google expects to include features to pinpoint the location of cell-phone users in the future. SBC's phone will let users access Yahoo! services including photos, instant messaging and e-mail, Sue McCain, a spokeswoman for San Antonio-based SBC, said. The phone will be made by Nokia Oyj, McCain said. Mobile-phone sales rose 30 percent last year to more than 674 million units, compared with a 12 percent increase in PC shipments to 189 million, according to Stamford, Conn.-based Gartner.
