Security systems advance and become more customizable

Some of the most popular defenses are motion detectors, glass-breaking sensors, window sensors, motion sensors and cameras. Backup radio components that sound the alarm if the phone lines are cut are also gaining popularity.
"When you can help people protect their possessions and their persons, that makes you feel good," said Mike Skott, a locksmith and certified alarm technician, owns and operates Advanced Security Inc., a local company in Union Grove.
We can give them protection tailored to their needs."
Risk assessment Unfortunately, Skott said most of his business comes from people who have already had their home broken into.
"If your house is similar to everyone else's in the neighborhood, you're a general risk," Bonifas said.
That combined with putting security system decals and signs on the exterior of the house, using deadbolt locks and keeping the bushes trimmed, can decrease the chance that a burglar would pick your home to break-in.
`First line of defense' Door sensors are one of the most important components and pretty standard on most systems.
The best places for motion detectors are in stairwells and foyers.
"It really has a lot to do with how the customer uses the property and what they want the security system for," Bonifas said.
For example, an urban couple who wants their home to be secure against burglars when they are gone is going to want different security system components than a family where the husband leaves his wife and children home several weeks out of the year traveling for business.
Pets If you have pets that are home when you're not, they can sometimes trigger a motion detector and set off a false alarm.
False alarms Security systems that cry wolf too often have become a major problem for law enforcement since the increase of residential systems.
Cost Skott said his security systems start out at about $200 for the initial installation, and go into the thousands for fancier systems.
