Australia awaits installment of massive solar power plant

by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor

By 2008, Perenjori, Australia could the site of a new solar power plant, once Perenjori Shire, Murdoch University and Prime Solar provide the estimated $20 million it will take to set up the plant.

AUSTRALIA'S largest solar power farm could be constructed near Perenjori by 2008 to provide fringe of grid power support for the local community. Titled the Very Large Scale Photovoltaic (VLS-PV) project it is being developed by Perenjori Shire, Murdoch University and Prime Solar and is estimated to cost up to $20million to construct. VLS-PV coordinator Phillip Jennings said the solar farm would produce between one and two megawatts of power which would be fed into the grid to provide support for Perenjori. He said because of its location, Perenjori often suffered from a minimal power supply when it was most needed. "This will be quite a model for the State, it will be the largest photovoltaic installation in Australia and it will be a demonstration of what could be done elsewhere in the State," he said. "There are 30 little mini-grids around the State and there are a number of areas around the fringe of the grid where the power is weak and this could be used to support them. The Perenjori VLS-PV design had not yet been finalised but is likely to consist of between 15,000 and 30,000 solar panels all 40cm by 50cm in size. The entire solar farm is expected to cover half a hectare and will most likely be located five kilometres north-west of Perenjori. Perenjori Shire president Brian Baxter said the VLS-PV project would be great for the community because it would provide a better power supply as well as jobs for residents. He said if the project was successful he hoped it would be developed further. Prof Jennings said a funding application for the project had to be submitted to the Sustainable Energy Development Office by mid-December.
