Anamax approved to build biodiesel plant in Wisconsin

by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor

Anamax Energy Services will build the first biodiesel production plant in DeDirest, Wisc., and have it running by 2006.

The first biodiesel production plant in Wisconsin has been approved by the DeForest Village Board and should be up and running in 2006, making 20 million gallons of fuel a year. Anamax Energy Services, a division of the Green Bay-based Anamax Corp., will build a 12,300-square-foot processing facility next to the existing Anamax Grease Services plant in an industrial park on DeForest's north side. Anamax will spend between $10 million and $15 million constructing the plant, which will employ 10-15 people. "The conditional use permit for the plant was approved by the Village Board Monday night so they are set to go," said Village Board President Jeff Miller. Mike Spahn, general manager of Anamax Grease Services, said groundbreaking for the biodiesel facility is expected to take place in November. Biodiesel fuel can be made from vegetable oils, animal fats or recycled restaurant greases, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. It's considered relatively safe, is biodegradable and reduces air pollution. The DeForest plant will be the 10th in the country and the only one in Wisconsin to produce biodiesel from multiple feedstocks, including using recycled oil collected at Anamax Grease Services next door. Bulk feedstocks will be delivered via rail to the plant, so the company is asking the DeForest Redevelopment Authority for financial assistance in the construction of a new rail spur track to the plant. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Dane County was the No. 2 soybean producer in the state in 2004 with 3.68 million bushels produced. Rock County was No. 1 at 3.82 million bushels. Using soybean and sunflower crop oils in the biodiesel plant also could stabilize and possibly improve crop prices in Wisconsin and the Midwest.
