Solar power will help low-income families in Bay Area

by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor

GRID Alternatives' Solar Affordable Housing Program will bring solar energy to San Francisco's low-income families.

City officials and folks from the San Francisco-based non-profit solar group GRID Alternatives will kick-off a new project designed to bring solar power to low-income families all over the Bay Area with a "Flip the Switch" event at 11 a.m. GRID Alternatives' Solar Affordable Housing Program encourages the use of renewable energy, while reducing monthly utility bills. The kickoff event will be held at 5693 Stonecliff Vista Lane, at one of the houses the city specifically designed as affordable housing. The home was the first to receive a new solar electric system through GRID Alternatives' Solar Affordable Housing Program. The 1.6kW solar electric system was installed by GRID Alternatives volunteers this past summer. Sponsors of the program include the City of Pleasanton and The San Francisco Foundation. Pleasanton Mayor Jennifer Hosterman and GRID Alternatives co-founders Erica Mackie and Tim Sears will speak at today's event. Information on the Solar Affordable Housing Program also will be available.
