Johnson Controls joins the growing hybrid-electric industry

Glendale-based Johnson Controls won its first contract to supply hybrid-electric batteries for a new luxury line of European cars that will debut in the U.S. sometime in 2009.
Oct. 12--Johnson Controls Inc. won its first contract to supply hybrid electric batteries for a line of luxury vehicles to be produced by a European automaker.
The announcement came as executives of the Glendale company told investors it will post record sales and earnings in the fiscal year that began Oct. 1.
Development of hybrid-electric vehicles is poised to boom as gasoline prices surge and consumers shed less fuel-efficient vehicles, like sport utility vehicles, and buy cleaner-burning, more efficient vehicles.
To accelerate its activity, Johnson Controls said Tuesday it will form a joint venture with Saft, a Paris maker of high-tech batteries.
"We have received an order from a major European (manufacturer) for development of hybrid batteries for their luxury vehicle line," said Gregg Sherrill, who runs the battery business.
"This furthers our confidence in that whole growth arena for us."
Sherrill didn't identify the customer, but confirmed that the company will be building luxury hybrid vehicles expected to go on sale in 2009 in North America.
