At the Michigan Solar Tour, inventions in solar power can effectively heat 90 percent of a home's air and water.

Niles, MI - The expected jump in natural gas prices this winter has people searching for ways to cut the cost of utilities, and some are more unique than others. On Saturday, the Michigan Solar Tour showcased a home in Niles, which has solar power to heat 90% of its water and to warm some of the air in the home. The homeowner says he's seen his heating bills drop by 15% to 20% since putting in the solar thermal panels. "So far, it's been fairly experimental for me. I've built the panels for the hot air myself, started to see what would work and the hot water system, I took advantage of a 50% state rebate this year to get those," said homeowner Dan Vandenheede. The home itself dates back to 1896, proving solar panel additions can work on both newer and older homes.
