Michelin to incorporate wind turbine technology at tire plant in France

by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor

French tire company Michelin is set to install a wind turbine farm to power one of its tire production plants in Dundee, France, and the company estimates the system -- slated to be operational by as early as next February -- will reduce power station emissions by more than 6,800 tons of carbon dioxide every year, reports The Evening Telegraph and Post.

The turbines, which will each be nearly 400 feet high when the blades are at their highest point and dominate the city's eastern skyline, could now be operational as early as next February. About a third of the annual power demand of the factory will be met by the new turbines. Michelin said today the company was "delighted" by the vote in favour of the power project by the city council's development quality committee. The company said in a statement, "Contracts are being finalised with the developer, Ecotricity, and it is planned to start installation within the next few months. The company said the turbines will generate around eight million kWh of power, approximately a third of the Baldovie factory's annual demand. "The cost benefits are significant to the site, but we have always maintained a degree of confidentiality about the absolute figures. "The environmental benefits result from less fossil fuel being burnt in power-stations elsewhere to supply the factory. "The benefits to the factory are not only purely financial in terms of direct cost reduction, but will also help to promote the Dundee factory within the Michelin Group as an innovative and progressive site. Michelin had originally proposed to position to site three wind turbines at Baldovie and planning permission for this project was granted by councillors early last year. Addressing the development quality committee, the general manager of the Baldovie plant, Trevor Haines, said the company had been manufacturing in Dundee for more than 30 years and he wanted to secure the long-term future for the factory and the employees in the city. Additional storage and other facilities are being provided at the complex with the aim of not only increasing production but reducing manufacturing and other costs.
