Australian prime minister under pressure to increase biodiesel availability
by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor
According to a transcript from Australian radio show PM, Prime Minister John Howard is under pressure from some of the public to make biodiesel more available from oil companies, but many oil companies and auto insurers are resisting the change to biofuels.
With the price of petrol rising the Prime Minister's now being pressured to convince the oil companies to provide more petrol and ethanol blends.
Bio-diesel and ethanol are renewable fuels made from natural products, and they're as much as 10 cents a litre cheaper than standard fuels.
The bio fuel industry - whose subsidies have been controversial in the past - has welcomed the government's decision to support an increase in ethanol use and spend money researching other alternate fuels.
BRIGID GLANVILLE: Waterway Constructions is one of the many businesses using biodiesel to run its engines and machinery.
RICK HAY: I get probably five or six calls a day requesting information, or where can I get biodiesel, so yeah, I sort of talk to different people from all directions in industry or private sector and there's a lot of people out there that want product.
BRIGID GLANVILLE: There are six biodiesel plants under construction around Australia, the largest is near Gosford on the New South Wales Central Coast.
It's hoped by 2008 these plants will be producing half a million litres of biodiesel a year, well in line with the Federal Government's planned target.
LEN HUMPHREYS: There's enough natural occurring feed stock between tallow and used cooking oil to probably support an industry here of about 500-600 million litres.
BRIGID GLANVILLE: Apart from the cheaper price of biofuels, supporters of the product say another positive is the claim it's much cleaner.
Waterway Constructions says working on Sydney Harbour, the environmentally friendly factor was another reason behind them switching to biodiesel.
What's happened in the last couple of weeks, in fact it was being sold in most places for the same price as unleaded but with the prices having gone up so much in the normal fuels, the unleaded fuels, many of the independent resellers of the ethanol blends have elected to actually offer a bit better value for the customer, and so are selling a premium product for less than the unleaded.
