by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor

The company LG Chem plans to mass-produce a lithium-ion battery for laptops and camcorders that has the world's largest storage capacity and can last 4.5 to 5.5 hours in laptops when fully charged.

Chem said yesterday that it will mass produce a cylindrical lithium-ion battery with the world's largest storage capacity. The company said it had finished testing the battery, which can be used in laptop computers and camcorders, and will start supplying them to major laptop companies next month. LG Chem said that when they are used in laptops, the batteries last between 4.5 hours and 5.5 hours when fully charged. "We are already at an equal level with the top Japanese manufacturers in high-tech battery technology," said Kim Myeong-ho, LG Chem's managing director. Korean and Japanese battery makers have been competing to increase the capacity of cylindrical lithium-ion batteries that are 18 millimeters in diameter and 65 millimeters tall. The battery, which can be used many times through recharging, can be also be used for heavy industrial machineries. The global market for lithium-ion batteries amounts to 5.2 trillion won ($5 billion). The company recently landed a $300 million contract with Hewlett-Packard to supply lithium-ion batteries to the American computer maker. The contract is the largest ever among the exporters of such high-tech batteries in Korea. Under the contract, the company will supply Hewlett-Packard with 10 million packs of cylindrical batteries for laptops until 2007.
