Researchers in Tasmania develop diesel/hydrogen hybrid engine

by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor

University of Tasmania researchers say they have developed an engine that runs on a combination of hydrogen and diesel fuels in an effort to reduce world dependency on fossil fuels, until 100 percent hydrogen fuel engines are perfected, reports The Age.

Tasmanian researchers say they have revolutionised energy production with the invention of an internal combustion engine that runs on a combination of hydrogen and diesel. The engine, believed to be a world first, can be attached to existing generators and will enable remote communities worldwide to reduce their reliance on fossil fuels. Associate Professor Vishy Karri, who unveiled the engine at the University of Tasmania on Friday, said it was a significant step in environmental protection. The engine would serve as a transitional step until the mainstream introduction of 100 per cent hydrogen engines, he said. It would be used on islands, in remote communities and on ships which already had existing diesel infrastructure. The same team has also produced Australia's first fully-developed hydrogen-powered motorcycle of the sort used by postmen. Dr Karri said Australian scientists are now leading the world in energy-producing technology. The rest of the world was forecasting development of such an engine in 10 to 15 years time, he said, adding: "But we had to say `What happens to the environment now? What are we doing to protect it now?'." "During this transition time, if you inject hydrogen along with the diesel into the engine, you are not only saving the diesel, but you are also helping the environment." The engine was one-and-a-half years in the making and was created by the Hydrogen and Allied Renewable Technologies research group, set up by the University of Tasmania and Hydro Tasmania. Dr Karri said he expected significant interest in the engine, particularly from Japan. "We've been keeping it under the hat and I have no doubt in my mind there will be phenomenal interest," he said.
