A European project to boost the fortunes of hydrogen fuel cell technology is presenting proposals for new hydrogen technologies. The project proposes a 10-year research and development agenda and a deployment strategy for a variety of hydrogen applications. The research is sponsored by the European Commission.
A European project to promote hydrogen fuel cells is presenting its proposals this week for the medium- and long-term development of the technology. The Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Platform (HFP) is sponsored by the European Commission and brings together industry, research institutes and public authorities. It was set up in September 2002."The potential for hydrogen fuel is very exciting. We already have prototype vehicles and it is estimated that commercialization and mass roll-out could start by 2020," said Janez Potocnik, European Commissioner for Science and Research."By bringing together all those with a stake in the future of hydrogen and fuel cell technology, with the support of the European Commission, the Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology Platform can assure the best use of resources for research, in ways that meet the needs of this growing industry."Using hydrogen as a fuel, said the HFP, can reduces greenhouse gas emissions, improve local air quality and provide a more secure energy supply. The group sees transport as a major application for fuel cells. The HFP is working on two documents: A strategic research agenda proposing a 10-year research, development and demonstration program; and a deployment strategy, which describes the first steps and key milestones for the market penetration of portable, stationary and transport applications by 2020.Research goals include reducing fuel cell system costs by a factor of 10 to 100, doubling the performance and durability of fuel cells, and cutting delivered hydrogen costs by a factor of three.
