Chicago officials indicted for fraud

Investigators are getting ever closer to discovering the corruption of Mayor Richard M. Daley's political operation in Chicago, charging five city officials for fraud and other abuses.
Five current and former Chicago officials were indicted Thursday on fraud charges as federal prosecutors expanded their investigation of patronage abuses at City Hall.
The five-count indictment was the latest development in an investigation that has penetrated the heart of Mayor Richard M. Daley's political operation and sent shock waves through City Hall.
The current or former city staffers were Robert Sorich, 42; Patrick Slattery, 42; and Timothy McCarthy, 37, all charged with mail fraud; John Sullivan, 38, charged with mail fraud and making false statements; and Daniel Katalinic, 54, charged with mail fraud.
He is cooperating in the investigation, officials said.
"This investigation continues to proceed rapidly," U.S. Attorney Patrick J. Fitzgerald said in a statement.
He urged anyone with information about the case to come forward with evidence.
The charges grow out of the federal government's 18-month investigation of the city's scandal-plagued Hired Truck Program.
So far, 36 defendants, including 20 current or former city employees have been charged and 23 convicted.
One died and the rest have charges that are pending.
The indictment said jobs and promotions were exchanged for political campaign work and indicated that further charges are likely to be coming.
