IRS warns public of accidental loss of thousands of checks

by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor

Recently a truck accident spilled 30,000 tax payments in the San Francisco Bay, so the IRS sent out warnings to those whose information and money could be in jeopardy.

A spokesman for the California Highway Patrol said Saturday the agency was continuing to investigate a truck accident on the San Mateo Bridge that ejected some 30,000 tax payments into the San Francisco Bay. Meanwhile, a San Francisco tax preparer warned that IRS customers should be vigilant about monitoring their credit reports if they believe that their payments are among the lost batch. Most payments included Social Security numbers and bank account numbers -- potential tools for identity theft. The truck -- driven by an employee of a delivery company under contract with the IRS -- was traveling eastbound on the San Mateo Bridge, going from the San Francisco post office to a Hayward IRS check processing center, at about 5:30 a.m. on Sept. 11 when the truck inexplicably crashed. CHP spokesman Christian Oliver said his agency, together with the IRS and Caltrans, responded to the solo-vehicle accident. "Caltrans and some Bank of America employees came out to help collect as much debris as they could," Oliver said. The IRS is sending letters to customers who usually send quarterly payments to the San Francisco post office. Any interest and penalties will be waived for people whose payments were lost as a result of the accident, Weller said. In the wake of the incident, the IRS is urging taxpayers who believe their payment might be among the lost batch to wait until Sept. 30 to call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040. The 1040-ES payments are quarterly estimated payments filed by individuals who are retired or self-employed, or whose income is otherwise not subject to withholding, such as people who collect revenue from investments. We were concerned about the incident, as we would in any circumstance in which there is a potential disclosure of people's personal information.
