Privacy Rights Clearinghouse Warns of Internet Check Fraud (press release)

by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor

The Privacy Rights Clearinghouse issued an alert today warning consumers to pay close attention to their checking accounts, which may be the latest target of identity thieves. Qchex.com, a San Diego-based company, allows its customers to create and print checks online without verifying the account holder's identity, according to its Terms of Use. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation has warned banks to watch for checks created by Qchex as they have been associated with fraud.

Consumers should be wary of accepting checks from unfamiliar sources, said Beth Givens, Director of Privacy Rights Clearinghouse.

Because of the lack of identification when the checks are created by Qchex.com, consumers are at risk of having their checking accounts drained. Recipients of the fraudulent checks are also at risk for loss.

Consumers who buy and sell items using Internet auctions should be especially cautious. According to the FDIC warning, consumers have reported receiving these checks for items sold over the Internet, which in some case were issued for an amount in excess of the actual transaction. Generally, in such circumstances, the sender of the check requests that the overpayment be returned via a wire transfer. Privacy Rights Clearinghouse advises consumers to not accept payment by check in such circumstances.
