Research suggests weight training can protect women against osteoporosis
by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor
Studies in the New England Journal of Medicine and the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) found that weight training twice a week resulted in a one percent increase in bone density over the course of one year for participants.
Bone density basically peaks in most people around age 30, beginning to slow as a natural part of the aging process.
In the case of women, the onset of menopause lowers the production of the hormone estrogen, essential in bone growth and replacement.
n Nevertheless, an estimated 6 million of the 28 million people who have osteoporosis are men.
n One-half of American women will have a fracture due to osteoporosis by the age of 75.
n Simple exercises for balance are strongly emphasized in the RSVP Bone Builders program to prevent falls and fractures.
The Mayo Clinic reports an estimated 40,000 deaths each year are results of complications due to bone fractures, costing an estimated $13.8 million in hospital and nursing home services.
n Proper exercise (with leg and hand weights provided) stresses bones, stimulating an increase in bone density.
n Studies in the New England Journal of Medicine and the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) report that women who participated in a weight training program twice weekly for a year, gained an average of 1 percent bone density, while a control group lost 2 percent to 2.5 percent over the same time period.
