Indian doctor finds diabetes rates are lower in rural areas than in cities

by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor

Dr K.P. Singh, while studying the cause behind the current trend of young diabetics, found that rural populations had much lower incidence rates for diabetes than city populations, explaining that the city kids have greater access to junk food and engage in less physical activity.

YET another indication that unhealthy lifestyle will be the death of us, can be understood by the fact that the incidence of Type-II diabetes is on the rise among children, those in the city included. ''The age of those suffering from Type II diabetes has come down to 10-15 years,'' said Dr K.P. Singh, senior consultant, endocrinology, Fortis, who added that junk food and sedentary habits have brought down the age of those suffering from Type-II diabetes, a condition which commonly occurs in adults. Dr Singh, who attended the meeting of the European Association of Study of Diabetes in September in Athens this year, highlighted the effect of lifestyle by citing the differences in the state of health of the people living on the two sides of the Rohtang pass. ''The incidence of diabetes in Lahual Spiti is 0.6 per cent, while in Kullu district it is around 6 per 6cent,'' Dr Singh said. He explained that those on the Lahaul and Spiti side were comparatively healthier due to the physical activities they undertook due to the adverse conditions. Those living on the Kullu side were suffering because of access to modern amenities. Coming back to the city, he said that around 40 per cent of the city residents showed pre-diabetes symptoms, a condition midway normal health and diabetes. Most of them had central obesity, he said. This, he said, predisposed them to a number of cardiovascular diseases.
