British Heart Foundation kicks off nutrition campaign for kids

by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor

Recent predictions have estimated that a quarter of British children will be obese by 2020, so in response, the British Heart Foundation has kicked off a large-scale information campaign to train kids about how unhealthy food is made.

More than one in three children do not know that the main ingredient of chips is potato, according to research published today by the British Heart Foundation. Some 36 per cent of eight to 14-year-olds could not identify the potato, while 37 per cent did not know that cheese was made mostly of milk. Nearly one in 10 of the 1,002 children questioned thought chips were mostly made of oil, while others suggested salt, eggs, flour, and even apples. The findings were revealed as the charity launched a campaign to get children to think about what was in their food and make healthier choices. Posters are being displayed showing what the British Heart Foundation says are the "common ingredients of cheeseburgers, hot dogs and chicken nuggets". The images of gristle, bones and connective tissue are obscured using a "censored" stamp. With 440,000 British children predicted to become overweight or obese in the next two years, and a quarter predicted to be obese by 2020, the charity said poor nutrition among children was a critical issue. "Banning foods or telling children not to eat them is not enough - we must engage children in understanding why certain foods are less healthy than others." As well as talking to children, the campaign is targeting the Government, food industry, local authorities, schools and parents. The BHF has identified three areas for change: stopping the marketing of unhealthy food and drink products to children; ensuring nutritious food is affordable, accessible and appealing; and providing children with opportunities to learn practical cooking skills. Children and parents are being urged to visit the campaign website, bhf.org.uk/food, to see the uncensored contents of the adverts and find out more about what is on their plate.
