Australian health care taxed by disabilities brought on by arthritis
by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor
Combining the number of rheumatoid arthritis cases with Osteoarthritis cases, the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare reports that 1.8 million Australians are affected by these conditions.
ARTHRITIS and musculo-skeletal conditions affect more than 6 million Australians -- leaving 1.2 million with disabilities -- and cost the country $4.6billion in 2000-01.
The tally made them the third-biggest drain on the nation's health system in that year.
Arthritis and osteoporosis cost the country $1.6 billion.
Osteoarthritis, the more common form of the disease, which attacks the hands, spine and weight-bearing joints, affects almost 1.4 million Australians, according to a new report.
The more disabling form, rheumatoid arthritis, affects about 438,000.
The report was by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare.
