People make adjustments for exercise in the winter months
by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor
To counteract the impact of cold weather on exercise patterns, fitness centers offer heated pools and weight rooms, and community bike shops offer services for modifying bikes to handle adverse winter weather conditions.
Winds blow through the Seacoast almost as though nature wants people to stop exercising for a few months.
With their help, people who play warm weather sports (such as tennis, soccer, swimming and cycling) have options other than watching television, reading books and waiting for spring.
Joshua DiJoseph, owner of Wheel Power on Water Street in Exeter, helps people ride bikes outside all year.
"We offer aqua aerobics for adults, and also swim lessons for competitive swim training," said Baetzel.
Results also offers a comprehensive Nautilus machine set for weight lifting, where personal trainers are available.
The club has membership rates (including student and senior discounts) to accommodate people who want to only use the fitness portion or the swim portion, or a comprehensive package (which includes both).
For a larger alternative with a more holistic approach, Synergy Health and Fitness Center works in conjunction with Exeter Hospital to offer medically based fitness programs.
Of course, outside during the winter, a number of seasonal sports are available, such as pond hockey, world-class skiing at one of New England's legendary slopes, or cross country skiing through Applecrest Farm's orchards in Hampton Falls, guided by the owner, Peter Wagner.
But for people who play sports that are typically only possible in warm weather, Bert Freedman of George and Phillips on Water Street in Exeter says recent changes have been made to help people continue playing, regardless of the weather.
"There's been a huge increase in adults playing indoor soccer.
Soccer has always stopped once the snow began to accumulate on the outdoor fields, but with the introduction of indoor soccer facilities, Freedman said, people have really become involved by playing in leagues.
