Colored contact lenses to be regulated by the FDA
by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor
Congress has passed a bill that requires the FDA to regulate the sale of colored contact lenses, shifting the lenses back into the medical category after the FDA defined them as cosmetic devices.
Following Senate approval, The House has passed a bill requiring colored contact lenses be dispensed by eye-care professionals, under authority of the Food and Drug Administration.
In 2003, the FDA changed the classification of noncorrective colored contact lenses from medical devices to cosmetic devices.
The newly approved bill requires the FDA to regulate decorative lenses the the same way as corrective contact lenses by reclassifying them as medical devices.
Rep. John Boozman, R-Ark., a former optometrist, says the bill comes just before a rise in colored contact sales for Halloween.
Boozman claims problems with unsupervised contact lens use can range from an eye infection to permanent loss of vision.
Boozman calls the bill requiring FDA's regulation "a simple fix to a very dangerous problem."
Eye doctors have warned that misusing the tinted lenses can lead to vision problems.
