Nassau county experiences rabies outbreak in raccoon population

by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor

Nassau Health Commissioner David Ackman has confirmed the 28th case of rabies in a raccoon this year, a significant jump from the previous year's total of 10.

Four more rabid raccoons have been found, the Nassau County Health Department said. The animals were found in Roslyn Harbor, Flower Hill, Locust Valley and Hicksville, the department said. This brings the total number of rabid raccoons in 2005 to 28. Anyone who sees a raccoon or other animal that is acting strangely should call the health department at (516) 571-2290, said Nassau Health Commissioner David Ackman. Do not touch dying or dead animals. If you must remove them use a shovel, wear gloves and double-bag the carcass. If a person is bitten by any animal they should be checked out by a doctor. Keep garbage cans closed tightly to avoid attracting animals. If a bat is found in a room, call the health department.
