Department of Health and Human Services Inspector General Daniel R. Levinson confirmed that Lester Crawford's resignation from the FDA is currently under investigation.
WASHINGTON -- The inspector general for the Department of Health and Human Services confirmed that an inquiry is under way into the recent resignation of Lester Crawford as commissioner of Food and Drug Administration.
Inspector General Daniel R. Levinson told Rep. Maurice Hinchey, D-N.Y., in a letter: "This office is currently reviewing the circumstances regarding Dr. Crawford's resignation.
Depending upon the results of the review, we will determine the next appropriate action."
Hinchey's office released the text of the letter Monday.
Several senators and House members sought the inquiry after Crawford resigned, but officials had previously refused to confirm one was under way.
In particular, the lawmakers wanted information about whether Crawford followed ethics laws that require he report his financial assets and income to the government.
Some reports have suggested that Crawford's resignation was related to an omission from his financial disclosure form.
HHS officials would not comment on the reports, calling it a personnel matter.
Crawford has denied that he had any conflicts with his finances and said he was simply tired and wanted to seek work elsewhere.
Crawford resigned Sept. 23, only two months after the Senate confirmed him as FDA chief.
During his confirmation process, Crawford endured an anonymous charge that he had an extramarital affair with an agency employee and that she received favorable treatment as a result.
The HHS inspector general found no evidence that it was true.
Crawford had been acting FDA commissioner for more than a year before his confirmation.
