Experts compare the health benefits of tap water and bottled water
by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor
Dr. Joanne Lunn, a nutrition scientist from the Nutrition Foundation, claims that the health differences between tap and bottled water are negligible, and several experts say standards are often more rigorous for tap water.
Tap water is readily available in every home in the UK and is cheaper than bottled water.
In the Yorkshire water area 500ml works out as 0.2 pence, considerably less than the 50 pence-plus price of bottled water.
Dr Joanne Lunn, a nutrition scientist from the Nutrition Foundation, said: "There are few nutritional differences between bottled and tap water, and regulations are often tighter for tap than bottled water."
Water naturally contains dissolved minerals such as calcium, magnesium, potassium and magnesium.
In the UK, it is estimated that hard water is supplied to about 60 per cent of homes and it has been suggested it may have a protective effect against cardiovascular disease and stroke.
Some people are concerned about flouride in tap water because research has shown that it can damage teeth, causing mottling and crumbling called flourosis.
According to NHS Direct there is only a low level of one part of flouride for every million parts of water in some water supplies.
Dr Lunn said: "It contributes to the maintenance of bone health by supporting bone mineralisation and it protects teeth against dental decay.
The UK Drinking Water Inspectorate (DWI) says that if your home has lead pipes, your drinking water could contain high levels of lead.
Volvic water Bottled water offers the consumer a choice of a variety of water with flavored and carbonated verions as well.
"Bottled waters are a convenient and easy way for many to keep hydrated, particularly when travelling or engaging in physical activity," Dr Lunn said.
UK spring water must meet certain hygiene standards, but may be treated in order that they meet limits set on pollution.
If babies are bottle-fed the powder formulas must be mixed with sterilised water which has been boiled and cooled.
