Research published today by BMA Scotland reveals that more than 70 % of Scottish workers questioned believed they had put on weight because of eating badly in the office, and almost half said work stress made them less likely to choose healthy foods.
BMA Scotland is now calling on employers to do more to promote a healthy active lifestyle.
DR Dean Marshall from the BMA Scotland said: "Even just having leaflets available advice available that's as I say leaflets, or online for smaller companies to larger companies to trying initiatives where they have in house catering to make sure there's a healthier diet available to their staff to make sure they're encouraged to take some exercise, whether there's a gym on site or doing some deal with a local gym so they can exercise before or after or during work.
The survey of more than 100 Scots by health charity Developing Patient Partnerships said the research suggested that educating people about healthy eating at work could have a significant impact on productivity levels, as well as on workers' well-being.
It is launching a campaign, Working Your Way To A Fitter Day, to make sure people know how to manage their diet and activity levels in and out of the workplace.
He said: "Jamie Oliver has highlighted the positive affects that healthy eating has on children during their day at school - we now need to ensure that this principle is applied to the workplace.
Employers have enormous potential to gain from creating an environment which helps workers achieve healthier lifestyles and make healthy choices."
