British diet experts realize the connection between diet and mental health

by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor

Diet experts discuss the mental benefits of fruits and vegetables, and explain how dehydration can cause lethargy and lapses in concentration.

There is now growing evidence to show that this is a two way relationship and that the food we eat has an effect on how we feel and on our mental health. Eating five portions of fruit and vegetables per day, drinking enough water and getting enough Omega 3 fatty acids - found in foods such as oily fish and some nuts - can be a significant contributory factor to the prevention of depression and other mental health problems. A diet low in vegetables and fruit may contribute toward low energy, poor mental functioning, anxiety, insomnia, schizophrenia and depression. A balance of minerals and nutrients is required to ensure healthy brain function and development and to improve mental health and emotional well being. Dehydration may cause poor concentration and lethargy. A diet high in omega 3 fatty acids may lead to a reduction in the above mood states and to increased energy and positive mood. Eating large quantities of saturated fats - which are solid at room temperature - is thought to disrupt brain cell function and communication. To promote the message that you really can 'Eat Yourself Happy', in Manchester several organisations are holding events and activities continuing throughout November to celebrate mental health and well being and raise awareness about food and mental health. Resources in Manchester libraries include books, relaxation tapes and information sheets/guides on different problems, self-help, local and national support agencies. At the Manchester Food and Drink festival a new "food and mood" self help guide was launched which gives information about the impact of food on mood and step-by-step advice for making simple and achievable changes to diet to improve mental health. There's information about getting more support, websites, further reading and help-lines too.
