At a conference on student health, organized by the Royal College of Nursing and the lecturers’ union NATFHE in Exeter, the National Union of Students met with public health officials to discuss the impact of sub-standard housing on student mental health.
Mental and sexual health are the key issues for students, a conference heard.
The conference on student health was organised by the Royal College of Nursing and the lecturers' union NATFHE in Exeter.
The National Union of Students welcomed the conference which, it said, reflected its own view that student health should be a priority this year.
The NUS said sub-standard housing was aggravating mental health problems among students.
And it called for greater provision for diagnosing and treating sexually transmitted infections.
NUS Vice President Welfare Veronica King said: "The health and welfare of students has never been such an important issue: over a million of our membership suffer from mental ill health and sexual health problems are highest amongst 18-24 year olds.
She added: "Too many students still live in sub standard housing."
